The Sherline Compound Slide Instructions provide guidance for utilizing the compound slide to turn tapers and cut angles on a lathe without the need to rotate the headstock. The slide is designed with a red anodized base featuring laser-engraved angle scales, facilitating easy angle settings. It employs an efficient locking ring design to secure its position without excessive tightening of the locking screws. A 1/4-inch cutting tool can be mounted across the front or on either side of the head.
This compound slide is distinct from those used on full-size lathes, as it is intended for use from the “back” side of the table. This configuration allows for a more compact design and prevents interference from the crosslide handwheel. The lathe tool is inserted upside-down, with the cutting tip facing downward, maintaining convenience in operating the crosslide handwheel.
The slide block offers a travel distance of up to 1.75 inches when aligned square to the base or angled slightly. However, when angled at 45 degrees, the handwheel may contact the base corner, reducing travel to approximately 1.25 inches. Travel is restricted between these dimensions at angles ranging from about 20 to 45 degrees, depending on the specific angle.
The Sherline compound slide is available in both inch and metric versions. The inch version features a handwheel calibrated in 0.001-inch increments, driven by a 20 TPI leadscrew, while the metric version is calibrated in 0.01 mm increments with a 1 mm pitch leadscrew. The inch handwheels have 50 marks per revolution, equating to 0.050 inches, and the metric handwheels have 100 marks per revolution, equating to 1.0 mm.
Note: The Headstock Riser Block (P/N 1297) is required to use the Quick-Change Tool Post or any other tool post on the compound slide. Modifications may be necessary to align the cutter on the centerline.
