The Sherline Flat-Base Headstock w/ 90-Volt DC Motor ER-16 is a precision-engineered component designed for industrial applications, drawing its design from the headstock used in Sherline’s lathe and milling machines. Constructed from extruded 6061-T6 aluminum with a black anodized finish, this headstock is equipped with an ER-16 spindle. The spindle features lifetime lubricated bearings with adjustable preload, ensuring enhanced accuracy, tighter tolerance, smoother operation, and cooler running. The bearings are rated for continuous speeds up to approximately 4,000 RPM, with the possibility of adjusting the preload for speeds up to 10,000 RPM.

The headstock includes two 1/4-20 mounting holes and an alignment key slot on the base, facilitating precise installation on various fixtures or machines. A 3/16-inch alignment key slot aids in accurate positioning. The design incorporates a .405-inch through hole, allowing long stock to pass through the spindle, although it is not intended for high RPM rotation of long or out-of-round parts. The spindle is equipped with a dust cover to protect the bearings, though it is not fully sealed, and is not suitable for use in coolant baths.

The headstock is powered by a robust 90-volt DC motor, which provides maximum torque at low RPM, offering more usable power than comparable AC/DC motors. The motor operates smoothly and quietly, with a variable speed electronic control ranging from 70 to 2800 RPM. It features a load compensating circuit to maintain constant RPM and accepts input from 100 to 240 VAC, automatically converting it to 90V DC output. The V-step pulley offers two positions for adjusting speed and torque, enhancing the versatility of the headstock for various machining tasks.
