Initially, Sherline mills manufactured before 1999 employed a nylon friction lock system, which required a socket head screw to secure the mill column gib and dovetail. However, with the advent of the Model 2000 mill in late 1998, a new locking system was introduced. This innovative system features a brass lever on the leadscrew that locks against the top of the saddle nut, offering a more secure lock without the need for additional tools.

The upgrade involves replacing the existing system with a new locking lever and a saddle nut equipped with a spring-loaded ball. This design prevents the lever from self-locking when the leadscrew is turned, thereby enhancing the functionality of older machines. For those replacing a worn-out saddle nut, this upgrade simultaneously improves the machine’s performance.
