The SparkFun BlueSMiRF V2 – Bluetooth Serial UART Link w/ Headers (3.3V-5V) serves as a wireless Bluetooth serial link, facilitating the transmission of serial data without the need for cables. This device operates as a wireless serial UART pipe, allowing for seamless data transfer between two devices with a baud rate ranging from 2400 to 921600. It is capable of duplex transmissions at speeds up to 921600bps, ensuring that data is buffered, transmitted, and received accurately.
The BlueSMiRF V2 boasts several enhancements over its predecessor, maintaining compatibility with the pinout of previous Bluetooth Mates and USB-to-serial converters, thus ensuring ease of connection with a variety of development boards and precision GNSS breakout boards. It can be directly connected to boards such as the Arduino Pro Mini, LilyPad Arduino 328 Main, and others with a standard 6-pin serial connector. The inclusion of a row of 1×6 male, right-angle headers allows for direct connection to a female header or use in a breadboard, making it an ideal choice for short-range applications within a 100ft (33m) indoor range that require straightforward, point-to-point communication.
The BlueSMiRF V2 can interface with phones or computers for data viewing or remote control. Pairing two BlueSMiRF units is simplified with the onboard PAIR button, which can be disabled if necessary. The device is designed to be configured remotely via a serial terminal app on a phone, with settings such as baud rate, flow control, and LED mode adjustable through an AT command set. It also supports Over The Air (OTA) firmware updates via WiFi.
This version includes an onboard voltage regulator, accommodating power inputs between 3.3V and 5V, and features logic level shifting circuitry on all pins for voltage tolerance. It is equipped with two LEDs that indicate connection status and serial UART traffic. The BlueSMiRF V2 primarily supports Bluetooth classic (Serial Port Profile or SPP), which is compatible with Android phones, most desktops, and laptops, and also offers support for the BLE protocol, which is available on all Apple phones.
Please note that for higher voltages, an RS232 to TTL converter is required. Additionally, a jumper is present to bypass the voltage regulator if needed.
