The Zio Qwiic Air Quality Sensor CCS811 IC is a tiny gas sensor that can detect the amount of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and CO2 in the atmosphere, making it ideal for indoor air quality monitoring. It can be used in conjunction with other Zio Qwiic sensors to create a comprehensive indoor environment monitoring module.
This sensor can measure eCO2 (equivalent calculated carbon dioxide) in the range of 400 to 8192 ppm (parts per million), VOC (Total Volatile Organic Compound) in the range of 0 to 1187 ppb (parts per billion), and ambient temperature (optional with NTC Thermistor* which can help compensate readings).
The CCS811 has a configurable interrupt pin that can be enabled when a conversion is ready and when user defined thresholds have been reached. It also has the ability to take measurements at set intervals of 250 milliseconds, 1, 10 and 60 seconds, making it easy to receive data.
Like other Zio Qwiic boards, it features a Qwiic connector for easy setup, and breakout pins for use with a breadboard.
It is important to note that, like all VOC/Gas sensors, it must be calibrated before use. The sensor must be run for 48 hours the first time it is used, then 20 minutes on preferred mode every time thereafter; otherwise, it will give inaccurate readings.
